Holt is a small populated city in Delhi Charter Township of Ingham County. It’s about 10-15 minutes to Okemos and 20-25 minutes to downtown Lansing. The city would be considered part of the ‘East’ side of Greater Lansing in Mid Michigan. If you’re looking for private or public schools, Holt is considered a nice place for education and a great place to live.


The public school for Holt and Dimondale is Holt Senior High School which has around 1285 students and 17 to 1 student to teacher ratio. Around 30% of the kids enrolled in the public schools are economically disadvantaged. There is a main campus and a North campus across the street. Nearby public schools include Mason School District, Eaton Rapids Public Schools, Okemos Schools and Lansing.


Holt is divided into grades K-4, 5th to 6th grade, and 7-12 grade. For Kindergarten to 4th grades, there are plenty of options including Elliott Elementary School, Dimondale, Horizon, Wilcox, and Sycamore. Grades 5-6 include Hope Middle Schools, Holt Junior High School, and Washington Woods. There is an online family learning connection website available for parents and guardians who want access to online resources for their children. This is a great tool to use if they need extra guidance. You will need to sign up and create a login and username, then select your child’s grade, then choose one of three subjects (behavior, math, reading) and select a topic that you want to learn more about.


Do you have young children, toddlers, or preschoolers? If you’re looking for affordable in-home daycare options, here are a few ideas. First, you can join different Facebook community groups and ask your neighbors. Some parents offer private daycare at their home for a reasonable rate, daily or weekly prices depend on the caregiver. However, I suggest you take the time to verify that they are licensed before you sign up. Looking for private education? Holt Lutheran Schools is a private school on 2418 Aurelius that provides K-8th grade academics, topics include spiritual education as well. Midway Early Learning Center offers early childhood for 3 and 4 years old and child care for infants older than 6 weeks old. The available programs include GSRP (Great Start Readiness), preschool, before and after school programs for kids in grades Kingdergarten to 6th grade and a summer camp adventure. Another early childhood center option for you is SonShine. The classrooms are divided between infant, toddler, prekindergarten, preschool. The toddler room is also known as the ‘walker room’ for ages 12 to 24 months. They explain their ratio of teacher to child or assistant to child is between 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 for each kid. Online schools? Yes, Michigan offers quite a bit variety as far as virtual learning and education centers for students. The closest virtual schools for Holt residents is in Okemos called Michigan Connections Academy. The office is located near Chippewa Middle School on Bennett Road.


What fun things can you do with your kids? One of the most popular kid friendly activities in town is the skating rink, which has been around for years and is still a classic for everyone. It’s called the Edru Skate A Rama and it’s opened all year, very affordable rental skates, great music, and they offer birthday parties! But it’s not just for kids, they also have opportunities for older kids and parents to enjoy themselves! The rink offers sessions for moms or dads to skate around with strollers or take their kids with ride-on toys.


Do you love to go to the park? Well this town offers several such as Centennial Farms which offers a playground, nature trails, and is very spacious with 10 acres of land! The park opens at 8:00 am and is located off of Aurelius Road and backs up to a neighborhood. Another great place to walk around is Jaycee Park which is 2 acres, has a playground, long trail in the woods and is part of the Ram Trail, and a few picnic tables for large group gatherings or BBQ time!


What is there to do here? Are you looking to hike or walk for miles, bike, walk your dog, or spend lots of time outdoors because you love wildlife? What about Fishing? Where can you canoe or go kayaking? You need to checkout Esker Landing, it’s the only one of the five parks that allows canoeing or these water activities. But if you love swimming or beaches, head over to Valhalla on Pine Tree Rd, it’s a great tourist attraction! Do you love supporting your local town and going to the farmer’s market? When is the season to shop for vegetables and delicious homemade goods? Vendors are opened throughout the year between May and November on Saturdays from 9:00am to 2:00pm. There is also a winter market for those who want to go between January and April. This farmer’s market hosts several music entertainers, local artists and events year round such as Food Frenzy, Mini-market on Friday afternoons, and seasonal holiday fun. What is the Holt Fest? This annual festival often held in August is the largest in town with two stages for entertainment and singers, local bands, family and kid friendly activities, face painting, over 20 food vendors, animal magic shows, beer tent.

First, you might consider contacting the township to inquire about renting space at the Holt Community Center and setting up chairs and tables in the meeting rooms. This is a great idea if you have a budget and are looking to plan a low-cost wedding with a small group of people. I would suggest asking whether they can accommodate both a reception, outside catering, and a ceremony.


Another idea is Charlar Place Banquet and Catering which is handicap accessible, overlooks the pond and view of the gardens. There is a dance floor, centerpiece rentals, bar services, bartender, flower, linen, chair covers, sashes, and tablecloth rentals.
