Is Okemos one of the 19 best places to live in Michigan ?

Here's what you need to know

Are you thinking about living here? What’s the lifestyle like in this community? Is Okemos MI safe?

When selling or buying here, this is a great community that resides in Greater Lansing Michigan with the 48864 zip code. The drive is roughly 20 minutes to downtown Lansing MI. You can commute to Michigan State University in minutes, just down Mt Hope Road. It is located in Meridian Township of Ingham County.

So, what cities surround this large community? Holt, Williamston, East Lansing, Haslett, Lansing, and Onondaga. Where are the nearby public schools? The city is close to Holt and Dimondale Public Schools, Haslett High School, and Mason Bulldogs.

What things do you know about this school system? Okemos Public Schools includes a high school mascot of the Chiefs. 5th and 6th grade students attend Kinawa Middle School. 7th and 8th graders attend Chippewa Middle School. Both schools are next to each other just a few blocks away, so you can easily walk the sidewalk to get to each. For younger kids, the public schools include Cornell and Hiawatha Elementary School.

Are you a parent with a child of special needs? Here is a quick overview of the special education services. The district offers general education inclusion and their classrooms offer autism spectrum disorder services, and caring services for children who are cognitively and emotionally impaired. They also have early on services for toddlers and young children with disabilities to receive physical therapy through the early childhood special education program.

Get after-school care for your older child while you’re still at work. Okemos Kids Club welcomes before and after care programs for older kids. The most well known private school is St Martha’s Roman Catholic School to enrolls students up to 8th grade. Currently they have around 119 children enrolled in their program. You can go to their website to find out more details (see below for my links of resources).

You’ll never believe all of the childcare options you have here. I found many early childhood centers, childcare, and daycare centers that are available for parents and families. Are you familiar with Tutor Time Childcare Learning Center? They offer kindergarten care. What about Montessori Radmoor School? The school offers programs from preschool aged to 6th grade. Okemos Kindercare enrolls up to preschool (Pre-K).

Want to learn about Okemos Public Montessori? It has been converted from the old Central Elementary School and offers a great playground set and swing set for recess time outdoors. It is located in the same building as the administration offices. Another option is GSRP (Great Start Readiness Program) for kids ages 3-4, this is a half day program. The full day program has care for babies 6 weeks old through 4 years old (infants, toddlers, preschoolers). They are currently located at Edgewood Early Childhood Center.

Who else wants a farmers market? Is this one of your favorite things to do on the weekends? Then this is the place for you. The farmers market is opened on Saturday mornings.  During this summer they are located in and around the pavilion near the Meridian historical village, near HOMTV Studio News. In the winter, you can find the food and craft vendors located inside the Meridian mall by the kiosks. Help support local producers and handmade artists including farmers with vegetable crops, bakery goods, meat and pork, popcorn, soap and jewelry makers.

You’re invited to walk the nature trails. So here are a few suggestions I found for you: Hatrick Park on Hulett Road, Wonch and Ferguson Park which offer playground sets, picnic tables and a pavilion for parties, get together celebrations with families or barbecuing. The Nancy Moore Park has just opened a small dog park for dogs under 30 pounds, to have a chance to run around without leashes. The large dog park will be opened soon according to the township.

How many parks can you find in this town? Ponderosa Preserve is a smaller, more recent park that opened on Hamilton Road. Central Park South and Ted Black Woods have nice trails with lots of trees.
